Google is taking over the world

I just downloaded the publicly available beta of Google Talk. They are using your gMail credentials which makes a lot of sense, and made it even easier to get up and running. They are also promising Skype type functionality, but it is not in the beta, which could be pretty cool also.

The really interesting thing from my point of view is that they are embracing XMPP from the beginning, which opens huge possibilites for developers wanting to do something interesting with their service. I guess this should be no suprise by now based on their track record with Search API's and Google Maps API's which in a relatively short period of time have led to some really interesting applications like the Pedometer.

I guess it remains to be seen how how quickly people will run to the latest messenger, I currently have Yahoo and MSN IM on my desktop and have added the third. What I would really like is to get rid of two of them and just use one. I wonder how long that might take...

You gotta let go of the utopia that is Google

While the Google mantra of "do no evil" was embraced by the developer world in the early years, it amazes me that people still see this gazillion dollar company as the knight in shining armour. First of all, the Google API sucks. They allow limited search volume and only on their web section. Can't search Google Groups using the API. The toys that have been released over the last few years, are just that toys. Embracing XMPP is not for the good of the developer world, it is for the good of Google. Since this is an open standard, Google correctly does not "invent" another one. All of the things they do are just enough to say they are not MSFT, but in the end that will be their problem... they just aren't MSFT. I just heard today that Google inked a deal with AOL which ensures AOL content gets returned at the top of searches. A sliipery road if you ask me.

gaim, trillian, miranda

Have you tried one of the multi-protocol IM clients? I know a few people - including Jens - that are happy with Trillian.

But on topic...Google attracted some of the best people - and starting with their API it showed through. I could make arguments for a Yahoo/Google duocracy...but its all speculation right now.
